TIRUVARUR: The 23rd Tamil Nadu junior inter-district athletic championship got off to a colourful start at the District Stadium here on Friday.
The three-day meet organised by Tiruvarur District Athletics Association (TDAA) has attracted participation from over 2,500 athletes from various parts of the State. It is conducted in the under-20, 18, 16 and 14 age categories for boys and girls.
The conventional march past of the teams and torch run marked the opening ceremony. Tamil Nadu Athletic Association (TNAA) president W. I. Dawaram declared the athletic meet open. Association vice-president C. Sylendra Babu hoisted the TDAA flag.

Commending the performances of L. Yogaraj, a promising high jumper and Tiruvarur native who is now part of the Indian team at the ongoing World Junior Athletic Championship in Poland, Mr. Dawaram cited the need for identifying more such talented youngsters in the districts. “The PETs shoud play a key-role in nurturing promising talents”.
