Kung Fu Panda Kung Fu Panda (Animated) Voice Cast: Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Michale Clarke Duncan Directors: John Stevenson, Mark Osborne There is something about Jack Black that makes one laugh. This reviewer has just discovered that there is something about Jack Black’s voice that makes one laugh. The first lines of the movie, spoken by Black’s tubby, chubby panda Po, “Legend tells of a legendary warrior whose kung fu skills were the stuff of legend,” sets off a silly smile that remains plastered through this cheerfully hectic movie. Po helps his dad run a noodle shop but he dreams of kung fu. By that weird quirk of fate, so beloved of our movies, Po finds himself fighting alongside his heroes, the legendary Furious Five — Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey — under the leadership of renowned master, Shifu. The wise Oogway chooses Po to be the dragon warrior to unlock the secrets of the dragon scroll, defeat the treacherous snow leopard Tai Lung, save the village and be a good guy. Po puts his heart and considerable girth to the task and with some help from unlikely quarters does all he is asked to do. As is now the given in animation movies, the voice cast is sufficiently heavy duty. Starting from Black as Po, there is Angelina Jolie as Tigress, Lucy Liu as Viper, Dustin Hoffman as Shifu and Jackie Chan as Monkey. The animation is wonderfully different with colours on the right side of vibrant. There are some truly awesome set pieces, including Tai Lung’s escape, the Furious Five’s stand-off with Tai Lung and the training sequences. Then there are also the heart-warming bits and the silly, funny sequences, with a delightfully high giggle quotient. The movie is smart without being over self-referential — which as we all know gets a bit tiresome after a point. How can anyone keep a straight face with lines like “It is said that his enemies would go blind from over-exposure to pure awesomeness”? Luckily, as Po graciously comments, “There is no charge for awesomeness... or attractiveness.” MINI ANTHIKAD-CHHIBBER
