Handicrafts from the northeast

Wares at the North East Craft Bazaar Handicraft exhibition in Bangalore.

Bangalore: From the north-eastern States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim comes the North Eastern Crafts Bazaar at the Indian Institute of Engineers in Bangalore.

On till July 23, the exhibition has been organised by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (a Union Government undertaking), with financial assistance extended by the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts, Union Ministry of textiles.

It was inaugurated here on Thursday by Deputy Inspector General of Police Malini Krishnamurthy, who visited each stall and spoke to craftspersons about the items they were selling.

60 stalls

There are 60 colourful stalls offering north-eastern handlooms and crafts, including sofa set made of bamboo, jewellery in brass and other metals, cane baskets and Assamese silk saris.

The exhibition aims to promote the sale of handicrafts and expose the crafts of the northeast to the market in cities.

The stalls also display carpets, mattresses and laishingfee (quilted cotton material) from Manipur, shawls, dolls made out of straw and clay, mekhala skirts and waistcoats.

The exhibition, with its 65 artisans and craftspersons, will have live demonstrations of select crafts.

D.C. Borkotoky, Additional General Manager, North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation, said the corporation is constantly looking to overcome the problems faced by craftsmen such as inadequate availability of raw material.
