Thiruvananthapuram: In an unusual case, ophthalmologists at the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here pulled out a 11-centimetre-long worm from the eye of a 58-year-old male patient. The patient, a diabetic, reported to the hospital with complaints of sudden onset of pain, redness and irritation in his left eye for three days. On initial examination, doctors observed a white thread-like material. But on closer inspection the object started wriggling, which led the team to confirm the presence of a worm. The live worm was pulled out in a surgery which lasted 15 minutes. Dirofilariasis immitis, a milky-white worm commonly known as dog heart worm, is transmitted through the bite of Culex, Aedis and Anopheles mosquitoes. The infection usually occurs in people who live in unhygienic surroundings. The worm has also been reported in veterinary doctors. A spokesman for the Hospital said a similar case was reported by the Orthopaedics department recently. In this case, a 15-centimetre-long worm was extracted from the right heel of a 30-year-old who reported to the hospital with swelling and pain for close to one year.
