On a happy note: Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Kerala, O.P. Sachan (left) addressing a press conference in Thrissur on Friday. THRISSUR: Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Kerala, O.P. Sachan has said that more programmes to create awareness about the need for prompt income tax payment would be conducted in Thrissur in 2008-2009. He said that efforts were on to bridge the gap between officials and tax-payers. “Seminars are being planned in the district. Thrissur is fast-developing. There is a lot of activity in the construction and jewellery sectors,” he said. The income-tax collection target in Thrissur for 2008-2009 is Rs.400 crore. There was 25 per cent growth in tax collection in the previous financial year. Of the Rs.1.17 lakh income tax assesses in the district, 92,000 had filed returns. “Officials carried out large-scale survey of the premises of business firms and conducted awareness programmes.Extensive transaction of property was reported last year. “We held a meeting of people involved and convinced them of the importance of paying tax,” said K.L. Maheswari, Income Tax Commissioner, Thrissur.
