BERHAMPUR: A police sub-inspector, Sarita Mohapatra of women’s police station in the city, was caught by the vigilance officials while she was accepting bribe inside the police station on Friday. It was another blot on the ‘khaki’ in the city following the unearthing of unaccounted property worth more than Rs. 2 crores last month from the possession of Girija Ratha, former circle-inspector of police posted in the city. Cases of bribery in women’s police stations are not new in Orissa. In recent past a sub-inspector, Kabitarani Nayak, posted in Rourkela women’s police station was nabbed while she was accepting bribe. Sarita was accepting a bribe of Rs. 5,000 from a city lawyer, Swapan Kumar Patro, inside the police station when the vigilance personnel caught her. She demanded the amount to speed up the process of filing of a charge-sheet in the Berhampur sessions court. Sarita was the investigating officer of an alleged rape case that had happened in a city hotel on June 19. An official of a private insurance company had allegedly raped a woman with the lure of a job. The accused was from outside Orissa and wanted bail. But the main hindrance in moving his bail petition was that the investigating officer had not filed the charge-sheet in court. As the lawyer of the accused Mr. Patro had approached Sarita with the request of speeding up the process, according to Mr. Patro, the policewoman informed that the charge-sheet was ready but she would be filing only if she would be provided Rs. 5,000. The lawyer had informed it to the vigilance department.
