Three villagers injured in bear attack in Nuapada district

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Man-bear conflict in Nuapada district got intensified when three villagers, who were attacked by sloth bear, were shifted to VSS Medical College, Sambalpur, on Friday.

Their condition is stated to be critical. At least seven persons, including additional district magistrate, sustained injuries when the sloth bear turned violent in Darlipada gram panchayat under Komna block of the district.

Last report from the district said the sloth bear escaped to a nearby forest after villagers chased the animal.

On Thursday, the bear was confined in Darlipada panchayat samiti office but forest officials failed to capture it. The animal, in stead, attacked villagers.

Residents of three villages spent a sleepless night on Thursday.

Meanwhile, forest officials from Khariar and Sambalpur are camping in those villages to capture the bear.

“We apprehend the sloth bear had lost her kids somewhere in three villages. As a result, it has turned violent,” Phakir Jagat, honorary wildlife warden from Khariar, said.

Moreover, another bear in nearby Rengalbahal village surfaced and injured a villager.
