Special Correspondent

TINDIVANAM: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S.Ramadoss on Friday inaugurated the Saraswathi Arts and Science College, established by the Vanniyar Educational Trust at Koneripattu, about 14 km from here on the Chennai highway.

His wife Saraswathi (after whom the college is named), Correspondent Srigandhi Parasuraman and a couple of parents lighted the kuthuvilakku. Dr. Ramadoss said the college was set up with the lofty ideals of enabling the wards of the poor and marginalised sections to access higher education. The college at present offers free education in five courses — B.Sc (computer science), B.Sc (visual communications), B.Com, B.A (history) and B.A (Tamil).

The college is open to students from all sections. A law college would be started soon followed by an engineering college next year.

The year after courses such as B.Sc in nursing and auxiliary nursing midwives would be started. The hundials kept in one-lakh Vanniyar households with a daily contribution of Re 1 each and that of the employed to the extent of Rs 50--Rs 100 a month provided the resources to the Trust to start the institution.
