Govt. to support use of power-efficient appliances

Staff Reporter

It will consider providing relief to consumers using them

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government would consider providing indirect cost relief to consumers who use power-efficient appliances, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said inaugurating a two-day seminar on “Energising Urban India” organised by the Consulting Engineers Association of India here on Friday.

The Chief Minister said her government had already worked on promoting and bringing down the cost of energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps. She expressed pleasure at the fact that most residents and important government buildings had changed to CFLs from normal bulbs.

To step up the pace of energy conservation and bring down the increasing rate of energy consumption, which is nine per cent per year, the Delhi Government would be concentrating on promoting public awareness about the importance of installing energy-efficient lighting and solar heating systems in major buildings. Also, it would be launching enforcement measures to ensure installation of such power-saving appliances. On the power scenario in the future, Ms. Dikshit said with new power plants coming up at Rithala, Bawana, Bamnauli and Jhajjar, Delhi can look to improved power supply in the coming years.

Asserting that there was a need to sensitise people about conservation since power was not an unending commodity, the Chief Minister said an incentive of Rs.6,000 was being given to each domestic category consumer for installation of solar water heating system. She said an energy audit of buildings was also envisaged. Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta termed the privatisation of power in Delhi as a success story. He said the private power companies had not only created infrastructure but also started giving dividend to the Government from the second year of their existence.
