Number of MRTS RPF personnel to be increased

P.Oppili

CHENNAI: The number of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel on the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) section, between Chennai Beach and Velachery railway stations, will be increased soon.

According to RPF sources, around 50 personnel man the 15 stations between Chennai Fort and Velachery. Apart from this they had to provide security to passenger reservation counters functioning in Mylapore and Besant Nagar and take care of stores, which is located near the Government Estate premises in the city.

A senior officer said 120 personnel would be the ideal strength to man the stations in the section. Only then incidents of chain snatching and theft of railway property could be prevented and protection to the passengers improved by the RPF personnel, he said.A proposal in this regard had been sent to the Railway Board seeking its approval. “We are awaiting clearance from the Board soon,” he said.

Though chain snatching cases are not common in the section, the existing strength of the personnel was inadequate, the officer said. More than targeting the commuters, the anti-socials were eyeing materials stacked in the stores and also the copper cables connecting signals in the section.
