TUTICORIN: K. Suresh, Chairman and Managing Director of Sethusamudram Corporation Limited (SCL), distributed certificates to 412 fisher folk in the district who had successfully completed the vocational training conducted by SCL, here on Friday.

Training was imparted in repair of cell phone and television, net mending, tailoring, palm craft, computer applications, nursing and entrepreneurship development, among others, under the Coastal Community Development Programme (CCDP) mooted by the SCL. Later speaking to reporters, Mr. Suresh said that the CCDP was aimed at offsetting the impact of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project on fisheries, if any, and to provide livelihood opportunities to people of 328 coastal villages in Tuticorin, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Tiruvarur, Tanjavur and Pudukottai districts.

A total of 6,700 people from these coastal districts had been trained under the CCDP at a project cost of about Rs. one crore since the launch of the programme in 2006.

About 1,700 more people would be given training over the next six months under the CCDP at a cost of Rs. 35 lakh.
