Haryana bid to set up nuclear power plant

Special Correspondent

State Government has decided to create an Energy Conservation Fund, says Hooda

Energy-efficient street lighting mandatory

Sets target of 5,000 MW of additional power

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government is making every effort to set up a nuclear power plant of 2,800 MW capacity at Kumharia in Fatehabad district to bridge the gap between increasing demand and supply of power, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Friday while inaugurating a national workshop on “Promoting the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC)” at Gurgaon.

According to an official spokesman here, the Chief Minister said the State Government had also signed MoUs for generation of 697 MW of power from renewable energy sources which are in different stages of implementation.

Re-affirming his regime’s resolve to give highest priority to increasing the electricity generation capacity, he said a target had been fixed to generate 5,000 MW of additional power in the State.

Two units of the Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram thermal power plant at Yamuna Nagar had started generating a total of 600 MW of electricity, he said, adding that a further generation of 600 MW would also start from the first unit of the 1,200-MW Rajiv Gandhi thermal project at Khedar village in Hisar district by December 2009 and 600 MW more from its second unit by March 2010. Generation of power from the 1,500-MW Indira Gandhi super thermal power plant at Jharli in Jhajjar district would start by 2010, he added.

Also, another thermal plant of 1,320 MW capacity is being installed right now in Jhajjar.

Mr. Hooda stated that the Government had decided to create a State Energy Conservation Fund and make use of energy-efficient street lighting systems mandatory with effect from April 2009 thus saving 222 MW of electricity.

The Chief Minister said the energy conservation fund would be used to meet the expenditure on promotion of various programmes aimed at conservation of energy.

He said all existing and new colonies and urban areas notified by the Urban Local Bodies Department, sectors of Haryana Urban Development Authority, industrial estates of Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation, housing complexes, colonies and townships developed by private or semi-government or autonomous institutions of the State would have energy-efficient street lighting system.

Appreciating that the Bureau of Energy Efficiency had prepared a Energy Conservation Building Code taking into consideration the five different climatic zones of India and accordingly fixed minimum energy consumption standards of buildings, Mr. Hooda said that while recognising the significance of energy conservation in the building sector the Govt. would ensure compliance of the Code in a phased manner in all new buildings to be constructed in the Government sector by April 2010.

In the first phase, during the current financial year, the new government buildings covering about one lakh square feet area would be constructed in compliance with the ECBC.

The workshop was organised by the Haryana Department of Renewable Energy and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency of the Power Ministry.
