SHIMLA: As a tribute to Brigadier R. D. Mehta, who was killed recently in a car bomb blast outside the Indian embassy in Afghanistan, the Himachal Pradesh Government on Friday named a road after him near his downtown residence in Keleston Estate in Shimla. The road originates from the Longwood Square near the local Girlsa College. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal visited Brigadier Mehta’s family on Friday and announced an ex gratia grant of Rs. 3 lakh. Mr. Dhumal also sent his condolences to the family of Roop Singh of Dhaban village in Mandi Sadar tehsil in Mandi district, who too was martyred in the same attack. He announced a sum of Rs. 1 lakh to the family. Recollecting the role played by the soldiers from the Himachal during the Kargil war, he said the hill State had martyred 52 of its brave sons in the Operation Vijay to flush out the foreign infiltrators. He said that of the four Param Vir Chakra awards, two were conferred on soldiers from Himachal Pradesh. He said it was a matter of pride that the first Param Vir Chakra winner of the country, Major Som Nath hailed from the hill State.
