About 10,000 villages are likely to be electrified in the country by March 31, 1961. The total provision for power projects in the Second Five-Year Plan is Rs. 426 crores, of which about Rs. 75 crores are expected to be utilised for rural electrification. This information is given by the Central Water and Power Commission of the Union Ministry of Irrigation and Power. The Commission is also drafting standards for rural electrification schemes for the country, the object being to reduce the cost of materials, economise in labour, and bring about uniformity in line construction practices.
