dated July 12, 1958: Hawthornden prize

Nineteen-year-old Dom Moraes, the first Indian to win Britain’s major literary award, the Hawthornden Prize, was presented with the award on July 10 at a ceremony held at the Arts Council of Britain, London. The prize, £ 100 and a silver medal, were presented by Lord David Cecil, Goldsmith Professor of English Literature at Oxford University, a past president of the Poetry Society and himself a pre-war winner of the award. Dom is an undergraduate at the Oxford University.
