Special package for farmers sought

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: A special package of debt relief for farmers who had repaid farm loans and were denied the benefits of the Union government’s debt waiver scheme was demanded at a convention organised by the Indian Farmers Movement (Infam) at Thottumukkom in Kozhikode district, Antony Kohuvanal, national general secretary, Infam, said on Friday.

The convention held on Monday was attended by farmers from Thottumukkom, Chundathumpoyil, Panamplavu, Konurkandi, and Vettilappara. A 15–member committee with Augustine Padinjarekkuttu as secretary and George Kevallil as convener was formed at the convention to chalk out a plan of action to press this demand.

An office has also started functioning at Thottumukkom to help farmers prepare claims for debt relief. A similar convention will be held in Thiruvambadi Assembly constituency on Sunday.
