Measures to ease traffic congestion promised Priority to Capital Roads Improvement Programme THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State government has given administrative sanction for a Rs.308.19-lakh project for the renovation of the Padmanabhapuram palace in neighbouring Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu, Minister for Education and Culture M.A. Baby said here on Friday. In reply to a written question in the Assembly, the Minister said the tender process for the work had begun. The renovation was expected to be completed by December 2009, he said. Traffic problemsMinister for Public Works Mons Joseph said the government would take steps to end traffic snarls and problems faced by road users in the three major cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. The Minister said priority would be given for construction of bus bays in the new projects to be implemented in these cities. Bus bays had already been constructed on roads built under the KSTP project, the Minister said. He said the government would ensure the construction of four flyovers in Kochi with the assistance of the Union government to ease traffic problems. Traffic problems in Kottayam town will be solved with the commissioning of the Mannarcaud bypass. Land acquisitionThe Minister said land acquisition for the proposed bypass that traverses four Assembly constituencies would begin soon. Mr. Mons Joseph said priority would be given to the completion of the Capital Roads Improvement Programme (CRIP) in the State capital. Amendments cannot be introduced to the CRIP at this stage, he said in reply to a question. The Minister said the traffic snarls on the VJT Hall-Asan Square stretch would come to an end after four-lane traffic was allowed through the Palayam-VJT Hall stretch. For this, the widening of the Palayam-VJT stretch had to be completed. ‘No felling of trees’Minister for Forests Benoy Viswom had brought to the notice of the government reports that trees in front of the University College would be felled for widening of M.G. road. “The trees will not be cut. If a tree is cut, we will plant 10 trees in its place,” the Minister added.
