A courageous ten-year-old makes education possible for him and his siblings
GOD-SENT: Collector T. N. Venkatesh lending an ear to Karnan, Gomathi and Murugesan whom he helped to pursue education. KARUR: Ten-year-old V. Karnan of Keeranur in Karur district would never have dreamt that one bold act of his would provide a fresh lease of life to him and his two siblings _ Murugesan (12) and Gomathi (14). Karnan, whose parents are dead and who along with his brother and sister have been at the mercy of the villagers for food and shelter, mustered courage, walked up to Collector T.N. Venkatesh who was holding a mass contact programme at nearby Samipillaipudur and submitted a petition, sketching his poignant situation and seeking assistance. The assistance he sought was not for food but for pursuing their education. Taken by surprise, Mr. Venkatesh immediately called all the three children and heard their tale of woe. A moved Collector then directed Special Tahsildar for Backward Classes Welfare R. Thangavelu to take steps to enroll the children at residential schools. Based on the Collector’s recommendation and prompting, Karnan was admitted into standard V of Government Primary School in Panjapatti and was accommodated at the Backward Classes Welfare Hostel there. Kadavur-based Inba Seva Sangam took Murugesan under its care by admitting him in standard VI of the school run by it and providing shelter. Gomathi has been accommodated in the Backward Classes Welfare hostel for girls at Panjapatti and admitted to the Government Higher Secondary School there. She has been extended a financial assistance of Rs. 1,000 and all have been provided school uniforms and stationery. The generosity of the district administration and the prompt response of the authorities provided succour to the three young minds in distress. A visibly relieved Murugesan profusely thanked the Collector and the officials. “We can never forget the gesture as this provides the lifeline for us. We can continue our studies despite the irreparable loss of our parents,” he said.
