ACTION-ORIENTED: P. Selvam, Monitoring Officer for Pudukottai district, inspecting a work on National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme at Veppankudi on Friday. Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar is also in the picture. PUDUKOTTAI: Monitoring Officer for Pudukottai district and Secretary to Government for Small Scale Industries P. Selvam has directed the district administration to take steps to construct additional shops at the ‘Uzhavar Sandhai’ in the town to accommodate more farmer-vendors. Mr. Selvam, who inspected the market, also listened to the vendors’ demand for construction of additional shops. The vendors said that the public response to the market was overwhelming, justifying the need for additional shops. He directed Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar to take immediate action, utilising the space available at the campus. Mr. Selvam later inspected the work on the underground drainage scheme being executed at Bose Nagar in the town. At Tiruvarankulam, near here, Mr. Selvam inspected the Upgraded Primary Health Centre and ascertained the health-care facilities. Deputy Director of Health, Aranthangi, I. Ravindran, told him that modern equipment including an ultra scan machine had been provided to the hospital. Mr. Selvam enquired with a cross-section of in-patients about the health care delivery at the hospital. At Veppankudi village near Tiruvarankulam, he inspected a fair price shop and ascertained the quantity of essential commodities being distributed. Mr. Selvam inspected a few works being executed under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam in Maanjan Viduthi and Mazhavarayanpatti. Women workers moreThe Collector said that women beneficiaries outnumbered men under the NREGS work at Veppankudi village. As many as 1,698 women and 644 men got job through the programme. District Revenue Officer R. Mahendravel and Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, A. Pazhanisamy were among those present.
