Foreigners learn hot air technology in Theni

Staff Reporter

THENI: For the first time, engineers from The Philippines have come down to Theni to learn hot air technology using solar power and use it for drying of salted and non-salted fish meant for exports.

Initially, they would buy a half tonne capacity solar dryer with 55 square mm solar panel that would supply hot air to the dryer for fish processing. They have plans to expand the capacity to two tonnes by setting up of three more units.

At present, we are exporting dry fish to the US, Canada and Japan from The Philippines. The solar drying system would cut electricity charges. Almost a third of power consumption would be slashed, said Joemarie P. Tingson, Manager, Engineering Service Consultant from The Philippines during his visit to the Planters Energy Network, which offers technology, machines and operation techniques, here on Friday to learn technology and purchase of dryer and solar panels.

The dryer unit has hot air generation unit through solar panel covered by tempered glass, coated copper absorber and air duct to supply air to dryer. It has several stainless steel mesh trays to keep the products to be dried and also an electrically-operated back up heating unit for non-sunny period.

Solar energy heaters are not only environment friendly but also cut down use of fossil fuel use and electric power. Another fish processing industry in the United Arab Emirates too has confirmed orders to buy solar dryer, according to C. Palaniappan, CEO of PEN and invited member of Special Task Force, International Energy Agency, France.

This technology has been widely used for drying ceramic, leather, vegetables and fruits across the country. The National Research and Development Corporation has sanctioned Rs.1.5 core to set up 20 solar dryers in Mozoram for livelihood of local communities.
