Hassan
Wasted effort: The Nirmal Nagar park in Hassan city is crying for attention. HASSAN: Hassan was known for its parks and greenery. But over the years, it has lost most of its greenery. The city had 38 parks once, but now there are only four. The area of one of the parks, Nirmala Nagar Park, has shrunk from 34 acres to 14 acres. Some part of the park has been encroached upon. The park has been reduced to a dumping yard. No steps have been taken by the Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC) to protect the parks. The Nammoora Seve activists had planted more than 5,000 saplings in the city, but nobody waters them. Nammoora Sene activist Suresh Guruji said they had shown the way to the people by planting saplings across the city and it was now left to residents to protect these plants. City Municipal Council vice-president Shankar said that Rs. 1 crore had been set aside for development of parks in the city.
