Jammu & Kashmir
On Guard: J&K Governor N.N.Vohra in Srinagar on Friday. SRINAGAR: Governor N. N. Vohra on Friday formally took over the reins of the government in Jammu and Kashmir and asked the administration to take all necessary steps to ensure peaceful elections. He said an undisturbed environment must prevail to ensure a free, fair and impartial electoral process. A day after he issued the proclamation imposing Governor’s rule in the State, Mr. Vohra was given a warm welcome with guard of honour on his visit to the Civil Secretariat here. Accompanied by State Chief Secretary S. S. Kapur, Principal Secretary B. B. Vyas and Director-General of Police Kuldip Khoda, the governor chaired a high-level meeting of secretaries of various departments and reviewed the progress of development. Later he visited the Police Headquarters and reviewed the overall security situation. Referring to the forthcoming electoral process in the State, Mr. Vohra stressed that each public servant must do his job efficiently and honestly as this alone would enable a credible election, leading to a smooth transition. He referred to the Assembly elections in the State due later this year and promised a smooth transition describing the present arrangement as a part of the democratic and Constitutional process. At Police Headquarters, Mr. Vohra complimented the J&K Police for facing challenges of terrorism and said they had played a vital role and must continue to do so in bringing about normalcy in the State. Timely clarifications on various sensitive issues would contribute to averting avoidable situations, he added. Addressing the administrative secretaries at the Civil Secretariat, Mr. Vohra spelt out his priorities and called for completion of key projects within a short time frame. Priority attention should be devoted to development projects like roads, bridges, education and health care services, he said.
