Huge scope for seafood processing and prawn-feed units in Nagapattinam
Special Correspondent
NAGAPATTINAM: New entrepreneurs should come forward to start seafood process and prawn-feed units taking advantage of huge seafood potential and growing shrimp farms on the 188-km-long coast in the district, Collector M. Jayaraman said on Friday.
Licences issued
Issuing licences for 105 more persons to start shrimp farms in the district, the Collector said that 555 licences were issued last year and the total number of shrimp farms for prawn culture had gone up to 1,783 in the district.
Pollution norms
The Collector advised the owners of shrimp farms to adhere to pollution norms and guidelines and run the farms without causing damage to the environment.
Mr Jayaraman pointed out that there was tremendous scope for starting seafood processing units in various parts of the district as this would bring foreign exchange to the country and improve the economic condition of fishermen community.
Similarly, prawn-feed units have to be started as the shrimp farms are now getting the feed only from other States, he said.
He said that the administration would encourage new entrepreneurs by getting them bank loan and subsidy from the Government for these units in the backward district.
