Let there be light: Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin inaugurates high mast lamps at 15 locations in Chennai at a function near Anna flyover on Friday. CHENNAI: With a gentle press of a remote, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin switched on the newly installed high mast lamps by the Chennai Corporation at 15 spots in the city on Friday. The light dispelled darkness of the Anna flyover neighbourhood which displayed stylish buildings amid the elegant green work of nature’s brush. This step is part of the initiative by the Corporation to beautify the city. The hoardings around the flyover were removed some months ago following Supreme Court intervention and the magnificence of the Chennai came to the fore. The 30-metre high mast lamps near the Anna flyover have been installed at the cost of Rs.18.50 lakh. Mayor M. Subramanian, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, and Deputy Mayor R.Sathyabama participated in the function. High mast lamps have also been installed on Taramani 100-feet road junction, Kodungaiyur, Rajaji Salai, Seetharam Nagar, Melpatti Ponnappan Street, Thangal, Otteri, G.K.M. Colony, Villivakkam, Velachery, Kasimedu, and Mahakavi Bharatiyar Nagar at the cost of Rs.1.02 crore. The corporation has also installed street lights near Nungambakkam tennis court. The Corporation has planned to install 10,220 new street lights and 26 high mast lamps in various parts of the city. Thirty-six new high mast lamps have already been installed in the city in the past two years, a press release from the Chennai Corporation said. Solatium givenEarlier in the day, Mr.Stalin handed over around Rs.2.20 lakh solatium to the kin of two ward councillors, R.Sridhar and Subramani, who died sometime ago. A press release said the solatium for Sridhar’s family included about Rs.1 lakh as family security fund and a day’s sitting fees of corporation councillors worth Rs.1.21 lakh. It was presented to S.Malathi, wife of Sridhar, who died in a road accident on March 31. S.Deivanai, wife of Subramani, was given Rs.2.20 lakh solatium. Confirmation ordersAnother press release said M.K.Stalin also handed over job confirmation orders to 16 time keepers working in the mechanical engineering department of the Chennai Corporation. The time-keepers have been working as temporary employees for 12 years and getting daily wages.
