Work on new domestic terminal at Chennai airport to take off soon

P. Oppili

CHENNAI: Work on the new domestic terminal at the airport here is expected to start very soon.

Dinesh Kumar, Airport Director, Chennai, told The Hindu that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was in the process of finalising tenders. Once the work was awarded, it would be completed within 30 months from the date of commencement. The proposed new domestic terminal would be a two-level terminal building. The first level would be for departures and the ground level for arrivals.

The terminal would have four modern baggage handling conveyors and three aerobridges, a spacious check-in and security hold area, besides passenger amenities available at a world-class airport, he said.

It would be constructed from the end of the existing domestic arrival terminal, close to the railway reservation counter. It would extend upto the air-conditioned plant located behind the AAI administrative building.

Construction of the new domestic terminal was part of airport expansion work, which included extension of the secondary runway by 832 metres and creating a parallel runway at the airport at a cost of Rs.1,800 crore.

With regard to aircraft movement, the Chennai airport recorded a growth of 17.5 per cent in the international sector and 15.5 per cent in the domestic sector. A total of 23,297 scheduled international flights were operated from Chennai during 2007-08, which was only 19,390 flights during the previous year. More than 17.58 lakh passengers travelled through the international sector during 2007-08, including both arrival and departure and in the domestic sector. During 2007-08, the international cargo movement through Chennai international terminal was 2.30 lakh tonnes, of which 1 lakh tonnes accounted for export and the remaining import.

For providing better handling of air cargo, nearly 19,000 sq.metres of covered space was added during the past two years, he added.
