Centre mulling ban on waste cotton export: Elangovan
Staff Reporter
E.V.K.S. Elangovan
SATHYAMANGALAM: The Centre is contemplating banning waste cotton export, according to Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan.
Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a function held at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School here on Friday, Mr. Elangovan said his Ministry was holding talks with the Finance Ministry in this regard. “Soon, we will come up with a decision and we may either go in for a ban on waste cotton export or regulate its export.”
The Minister’s announcement comes in the backdrop of persistent demands from open-end spinning mills, which have been demanding a ban on the export to help the domestic industry. Using the waste cotton, these mills produce coarser yarns for weaving bedspreads and other home furnishings. Because of the export, they suffer price escalation and end up paying 90 per cent of the cost of raw cotton.
