Railway staff stage demo

CHENNAI: Railway employees owing allegiance to the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) staged a demonstration in front of the General Manager’s office here on Friday demanding immediate implementation of the Sixth Central Pay Commission recommendations.
Their demands include 14 per cent increase in salary of Central government employees over and above the commission’s recommendation of 26 per cent increase, minimum basic pay of Rs.8,000, 3.5 per cent of the pay as annual increment and full reimbursement of educational fees and hostel fees of employees’ wards.
SRMU general secretary N. Kanniah warned the Centre that railway employees would be forced to go on strike from October if it failed to implement the sixth pay commission recommendations. with effect from January 1, 2006. He said the increase in prices of essential commodities and the delay in implementing the new pay scales had caused discontentment among railway employees.
