Ramadoss questions Guru’s detention under NSA

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss has questioned the detention of Vanniyar Sangham president and former PMK legislator J. Guru under the National Security Act (NSA).

“If Guru’s speech [made at a party meeting in January at Ariyalur] were to be considered inflammatory, is there no other way of handling it? What is the need for his detention under the NSA instead of the Indian Penal Code? Is there any precedent of the police booking cases under the NSA merely on the basis of speeches made at public forums and indoor meetings?” Dr. Ramadoss asked in a statement on Friday.

The PMK leader argued that the speech did not disturb law and order at Ariyalur. He wondered how the case against Mr. Guru could be booked now on the ground that his speech in January had disturbed law and order after Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, during the debate in the Assembly on the demands for grant to the Home department, had said the situation was generally good.
