Recruitment of Munsifs, Magistrates to proceed as per schedule, says TNPSC

Mohamed Imranullah S.

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) is processing applications for 201 District Munsif and Judicial Magistrate posts as per the recruitment notification issued by it on May 10.

R. Lalvena, Controller of Examinations, TNPSC, dismissed apprehensions that the recruitment process would be delayed until the government took a decision on the Madras High Court Judges’ recommendation to permit court staff across the State to apply for the posts.

Talking to The Hindu over phone on Friday, Mr. Lalvena said as of now he had not received any communication from the government. The written examinations would be held on August 2 and 3 as per the schedule and the applications filed by the court staff would not be considered.

The May 10 notification called for applications only from practising advocates, pleaders, Assistant Public Prosecutors and fresh law graduates. Court employees were excluded in accordance with provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Services (Cadre and Recruitment) Rules.

However, a Full Court (all Judges) meeting of the Madras High Court on June 27 decided to permit court employees to apply for the posts. It recommended to the State government to amend the Judicial Services Rules, and, consequently, instruct the TNPSC to issue a fresh recruitment notification. Lawyers demanded immediate withdrawal of the recommendations and boycotted the court proceedings from June 2. The Federation of District and Subordinate Courts’ Bar Associations of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, at an extraordinary general body meeting here on Friday, resolved to continue the ongoing boycott of courts till July 18.Federation chairman P. Paramasivam said the lawyers would hold a fast before court complexes across the State on July 16.

They would also conduct a rally in Chennai on July 18. Around 10,000 lawyers are expected to participate. Future course of action would be decided immediately after the rally. “The Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly told us that that the Full Court recommendations cannot be withdrawn and that it is up to the government to accept them or not. On the other hand, the Law Minister agreed that our demands were just. But it is painful to note that no favourable decision has been taken yet,” Mr. Paramasivam said.
