Pinarayi Vijayan THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Friday that the Indian Union Muslim League’s (IUML) decision to support the confidence vote in Parliament showed that it was serving U.S. interests. In a statement, Mr. Vijayan said the IUML must withdraw E. Ahamed from the Union government and vote against the government if it were to register its opposition to ‘the dangerous bid to surrender India before American imperialism.’ The Indo-U.S. nuclear deal and the fall of the Manmohan Singh government were interlinked. As such, the IUML must withdraw Mr. Ahamed and vote against the government, he added. The CPI(M) leader pointed out that the IUML MLAs were silent when Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy claimed after the demonstration inside the Assembly that the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal was essential to solve power shortage in the country. The argument was ridiculous because the deal would mean aligning India’s foreign policy with that of the U.S. The deal contained several dangerous provisions which would place the country at the mercy of the U.S. By voting for the Manmohan Singh government, the IUML would be giving its consent to all these provisions, he said. Citing an interview with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani published in The Hindu on Friday, Mr. Vijayan said the interview showed that the Congress and the BJP were on the same plane in so far as the nuclear deal was concerned. Describing U.S. President George Bush as ‘the most hated ruler in the world,’ he said the IUML’s vote in favour of the confidence vote would amount to giving its consent to the signing of the nuclear deal.
