Department targets higher tax collection

Thrissur: The Income Tax Department has set a collection target of Rs.3,475 crore for the State in 2008-2009.
Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Kerala, O.P. Sachan announced this at a press conference here on Friday.
“The department is confident of achieving the target. It has collected Rs.319 crore between April 1 and June 30, 2008, as against Rs.257 crore during the corresponding period in the previous year, registering 25 per cent growth,” he said.
The income tax collection target for 2007-2008 in the State was Rs.2,733 crore. The department collected Rs.2,773 crore, recording 28.79 per cent growth.
“The State met the income tax collection target for the first time in 2007-2008,” Mr. Sachan said.
