‘Institutions must not turn into teaching shops’

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh on Friday said private institutions of higher learning should not become teaching shops and such institutions should impart education that the governments were unable to provide. He was inaugurating the Bangalore campus of Symbiosis International University, the Pune-based deemed-to-be university here. Regarding Symbiosis Founder S.B. Mujumdar’s plea to accord deemed-to-be-university status to its distance education centre, Mr. Singh said the plea would appropriately be considered. The centre had enrolled over 1.4 lakh students across the globe.

He complimented the university for introducing reservation for other backward classes when the Centre had introduced the same.
