New scheme for accident victims

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The State Government is considering a scheme that will provide free, prompt and appropriate treatment to victims of road accidents.

Proposed by the Police Department, the scheme, which will rope in insurance companies and hospitals, will ensure that the victims reach hospital during the Golden Hour.

Insurance companies will be asked to contribute to a corpus meant exclusively for meeting the victims’ expenses. Hospitals that can provide free treatment will be identified. They will be classified into those providing immediate treatment and those offering super speciality care. This list will be made available to the police.

Should an accident occur, the victims will be taken to the nearest hospital and provided treatment. After treatment, the hospitals will submit the bills to the nodal funding authorities appointed in each district, who will immediately make the payment and then forward this information to the Motor Vehicles Claims Tribunal. The tribunal will deduct the treatment expenses from the compensation paid to the victims and deposit it back with the corpus.

On an average, insurance companies pay Rs. 10 lakh as compensation to the families of those killed and Rs. 1 lakh to those injured. Around Rs. 10,000 crore is given as compensation every year. “Giving prompt and quality treatment will reduce the number of deaths and disabilities and bring down the number of claims,” said a police officer.
