TIRUVARUR: For the three determined athletes, more than winning, entering record books seems to be the top priority. The trio – G. Gayathry, T, Manisha and K. Anandhi, set new meet records in their respective specialised events at the ongoing 23rd Tamil Nadu junior inter-district athletics championship. The meet is conducted by the Tiruvarur District Athletic Association (TDAA) at the District Stadium here. Trained by Nagaraj at St. Joseph’s Sports Academy, G. Gayathry, who represents the Kancheepuram district in the championship, set new meet record in 100m hurdles in the girls’ under-18 section clocking 14.1seconds. She bettered her own record of 14.5s, which was set in Karur last year. Gayathry also bagged gold in triple jump. “I practiced hard before the meet and am happy it has paid rich dividends,” says Gayathry. T. Manisha, a standard XI student of Muthiah Alagappa Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sivaganga, who competed in girls’ under-16 section, hurled the javelin to a distance of 33m and entered the record books. Manisha erased her own record of 32.34m, which she managed in the last edition of the meet. She is trained by G. Murugesan. “Manisha has it in her to make it big in javelin. Our systematic training schedules focuses on achieving the goal,” says the coach. Manisha secured silver in discus throw as well. Another promising athlete, who made a mark at the meet was K. Anandhi of Tirunelveli. She scaled 1.67m in high jump in girls’ under-18section sinking the earlier record. The youngster practices under the watchful eyes of Frank Paul Jeyaseelan. Athletic Federation of India treasurer, C. Neelasivalingasamy, Tamil Nadu Athletic Association vice-president C. Sylendra Babu and TDAA president G. Anbalagan commended the young athletes.
