Making a career out of gaming

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: The gaming and animation industry is getting ready for a major gallop in the country, but the stride is bridled by lack of trained and talented hands , says one of the leading games and animation experts in the country Joshi Mark Premnath.

Mr. Joshi, who has worked with several international gaming projects including Forza, Colin Mcrae Dirt and Battlefield 2 Modern Combat, is the art director of a leading gaming and animation institute in Bangalore. He was in town to participate in a seminar on the ‘Scope of Gaming and Animation’ at JDT School of Multimedia here.

“I have been working with the industry for the last 15 years and I know the scope and prospects of this highly demanding arena of gaming and multimedia,” says Mr. Joshi. He thinks that gaming and animation can be a serious career option for youngsters in the emerging world of cutting edge entertainment, but he also rues that the country is yet to have enough number of quality institutions offering courses that meet international standards.

According to him, genuine talents need to be identified and trained by experts with industry exposure to meet the soaring demand for candidates in this high-paying job-front.

The Indian gaming market, according to sources, was worth $48 million in 2006. As many as 2,500 employees work in 150 different animation and gaming companies across the country. “The number of employees is projected to cross 13,000 by the year 2010,” says Mr. Joshi.
