CUTTACK: Noted artiste and ‘Bhishma Pitamaha’ of creative community in the State Asit Mukherjee passed away at a private hospital here in the city on Saturday morning. He was 75-years-old and is survived by wife, a son and two daughters. Family sources said Mukherjee complained of chest pain in the morning at his Chandini Chowk residence. He was shifted to a nearby private hospital where he breathed his last. Hundreds pay homageHearing about the sad demise of the artiste, hundreds of friends, relatives, well wishers and fellow-artistes rushed to his residence to pay their last respect to the departed soul. His body was later taken to Lalit Kala Academy in Bhubaneswar from where it was taken to Puri ‘Swarga Dwara’ for cremation, sources said. Born in Pathuria Sahi of Puri district on January 7, 1933, Mukherjee obtained a degree in fine arts from a Kolkata university in 1956. He was instrumental in giving commercial touch to fine arts and encouraged the creative community of the State to lead a decent life by eking out a living from fine arts. He was president of Orissa Lalit Kala Academy for about 15 years. PioneerMukherjee was a pioneer in book cover designing and illustration. Even when printing technology was at an infant stage in the State, he was a successful book cover designer. For his illustrious contributions in the field, Mukherjee had won the prestigious “Dharmapada” award in 2006.
