Pharmacologists told to provide more information about drugs to patients

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: Krisantha Weerasuriya, Regional Adviser, World Health Organisation, has appealed to pharmacologists to work towards providing more information about drugs to patients.

In his inaugural address at the annual conference of Southern Regional Indian Pharmacological Society at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research here on Saturday, he said that though pharmacology as a subject had evolved over a period of time, patients were yet to benefit from it.

“We are yet to provide the patients details such as the probable side effects of a drug and the cost of the medicine,” he said.

He appealed to teachers to inform medical students about the importance of providing information on a drug that they prescribed to patients. The pharmacologists should also come forward to help governments frame the State Drug Policy, he said.

Mr. Weerasuriya also favoured the establishment of drug information centres and providing details about drugs in all languages.

Director of JIPMER K.S.V.K. Subba Rao said the hospital spent around Rs. 4 crore annually to supply drugs to patients. Others who spoke at the function include S. Ramaswamy, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, JIMPER, C. Adithan, professor, Department of Pharmacology, JIPMER, and Prakash, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, JSS Medical College, Mysore.
