“There are 512 deformed cured leprosy patients in Puducherry” PUDUCHERRY: CERTH-India, a non-governmental organisation based in Puducherry, plans to launch a special programme to rehabilitate leprosy patients in Puducherry region. Presenting the annual report of the organisation on the occasion of its silver jubilee celebration on Friday, Director of CERTH-India N. Balassoupramanian said a Disability Prevention and Medical Rehabilitation survey conducted by the NGO from February to April 2008, revealed that there were a total of 512 “deformed cured leprosy patients” in Puducherry. In addition, the survey revealed that there were four patients under treatment for leprosy, having no deformities but needed continued care, he said. Mr. Balassoupramanian said a total of 222 patients showed interest in community based rehabilitation programmes. “Based on the realisation of financial support, we plan to launch the programme in total or in part in the near future,” he said.
