It’s a mix-up, claims sangha

Staff Correspondent

Bellary sangha said to be different organisation

It has been defunct for many years

DAVANGERE: The Karnataka Poura Seva Noukarara Sangha has condemned the seizure of the sangha office at Chitradurga two days ago by the tahsildar of Bellary. It questioned the action of the official and said that the tahsildar’s office had committed “jurisdictional excess”.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, president of the State Poura Seva Noukarara Sangha G.S. Manjunath said the State Government had issued an order appointing an administrator to the erstwhile Poura Seva Noukarara Sangha at Bellary, a different organisation, established by K.R. Achar in the early ’90s, but it had seized the office of the sangha in Chitradurga as it bore the same name. The order was specific to Bellary, he said, questioning the basis on which an official in Bellary district could lay hands on an office in Chitradurga.

Mr. Manjunath urged the State Government to initiate disciplinary action against the tahsildar and withdraw the order in the interests of the civic workers.

Defunct

“The Poura Seva Noukarara Sangha established by Mr. Achar has not been functioning for many years, and the Government should seize the office established by him instead of troubling civic workers in Chitradurga,” he added.

Although the noukarara sangha in Chitradurga was not registered under the Cooperative Societies Act, the Government had recognised it and invited its members for discussions whenever problems related to civic workers arose. The sangha had been fighting for the cause of civic workers, he said.

There were over 12,600 civic workers in the State, excluding those in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, and over 5,000 daily wage employees working in civic bodies. Mr. Manjunath said almost all of them were registered with the Poura Seva Noukarara Sangha. He also said some officials were trying to suppress an employees’ union by seizing its office. He warned that civic workers would stage agitations all over the State if the Government failed to withdraw its order and suspend the officials responsible for seizure of its Chitradurga office.
