SHGs claim they paid Rs. 67, 000 as ‘bribe’ to Extension Officer ‘This was to get annual grant sanctioned’ SHIMOGA: It is common to see people waiting in government offices to get their grievances redressed. But the taluk panchayat office in Shikaripur, the constituency represented by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, has been witnessing an unusual spectacle since Friday. Office-bearers of various women’s self-help groups (SHGs) have been staging a dharna in front of the taluk panchayat office to get back the “bribe” they had reportedly paid to the official concerned to get their annual grant sanctioned from the Government. But neither has the promised grant been sanctioned nor the “bribe” returned. The SHGs alleged that they had paid Rs. 67, 000 to the Extension Officer in the panchayat because he had threatened that the grant would otherwise be sanctioned to other organisations. The women representatives staging the dharna complained that repeated requests to higher officials in the panchayat had been in vain. Office-bearers of Jai Karnataka Sangh, Vighneswar Sangh, Bismillah Sangh, Kannadambe and Kaveri Stree Shakti groups are among those staging the dharna.
