Tax to be doubled for unauthorised buildings

Staff Correspondent

Move proposed by Finance and Taxation Standing Committee

No mention of survey on unauthorised buildings

BELLARY: The general body of the City Municipal Corporation, which met here on Friday, unanimously approved a decision to collect double the tax from owners of all unauthorised properties in Bellary city. Mayor Shobha Narayan chaired the meeting.

The proposal was made by the Finance, Taxations and Appeals Standing Committee, which said that several unauthorised buildings had come up, and their owners had not made any effort to get them regularised. It proposed that two times the current tax being received under the self-assessment scheme be collected from owners of unauthorised buildings.

However, no mention was made on whether a survey of unauthorised buildings had been carried out and the extent of revenue loss. During the discussion, several members pointed out that many unauthorised layouts had been formed and wanted to know what action had been taken in such cases.

In reply Raju, Commissioner of the Bellary Urban Development Authority, said many unauthorised layout developers and owners of buildings had filed applications before the Regularisation of Unauthorized Constructions Committee.

G. Somashekar Reddy, Bellary city MLA, wanted the officials to ensure that no new unauthorised layouts came up in the city.
