BANGALORE: “Project Green Karnataka,” an initiative of non-governmental organisation Eco Watch to plant one million saplings in the State in about two years, was launched near Doddaballapur on Saturday. Eco Watch has planted nearly 30,000 saplings under this programme, which has been taken up to increase the State’s green cover. Nearly 3,000 saplings were planted on 500 acres of land on the All India Radio’s Super Power Transmitter campus. Eco Watch chairman Suresh Heblikar said that loss of green cover had affected natural resources such as soil water and atmosphere. The organisation aims at growing a million trees in phases and thereby helping in improving the green cover. Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao inaugurated the initiative by planting a sapling. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dilip Kumar; swimmer Nisha Mille;writer Anitha Nair; and DGP (Fire and Emergency Services) Jija Hari Singh spoke on the occasion.
