Slum children take active part in an educational mela

JAIPUR: A “reading mela” organised by Pratham Rajasthan here over the weekend for enhancing the reading, writing and arithmetic skills of children attracted a large number of participants from five slum colonies of the Civil Lines zone. Children evinced a keen interest in the fun activities.

The mela was held in continuation of a series of 130 summer camps organised for the slum children in the city since the last week of May this year under the Read Rajasthan Initiative. The Rajasthan chapter of Pratham, a non-government organisation working in 21 States, has launched the drive.

Other activities

Among the activities organised to make learning interesting for children, “bundle of sticks” was for familiarisation with basic mathematical operations, “currency notes” was arranged to acquaint the children with daily life transactions and “reading test” was conducted to check the learning level.

A health check-up was also conducted for determining general well-being of children. They were provided with report cards carrying their reading level, health status and personal information.

In addition to the children, members of the local community groups and office-bearers of the Basti Shiksha Samitis also took part in the mela. Stalls for reading, painting, games and math exercises were also put up on the occasion.

Aim

Pratham Rajasthan Managing Trustee Kulbhushan Kothari said the non-profit organisation was working for universalisation of “quality elementary education”. It serves the children with the motto of “every child in school and learning well”.
