The jury selected Mr. Sreenivas for the award in view of his contributions to Malayalam film music. Kochi: P.B. Sreenivas, eminent playback singer in South Indian languages, has been selected for the Kamukara Award instituted by the Kamukara Foundation in memory of the noted Malayalam singer, Kamukara Purushothaman. The singer had been selected by a jury headed by music composer Vidyadharan after considering the views of the public and organisations concerned. The jury selected Mr. Sreenivas for the award in view of his contributions to South Indian film music, especially Malayalam film music, Mr. Vidhyadharan told a press conference. Born in Karnataka, the 78-year-old Prathivadhi Bhayankara Sreenivas has sung many popular songs in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. He began singing at stage shows from the age of 12. He entered the film world by singing a chorus in a Hindi film in 1952. He sang his first solo song for “Jathakam”, a film simultaneously produced in Tamil and Telugu. The film in which Keralite actor T.K. Balachandran played the lead role came out in 1953. Based on the tunes of the Mohammed Rafi-rendered Ye Sindhagi, the song received the attention of many connoisseurs of film music. In Malayalam, he has written a song, Jil Jil Kinare… for Thadakam, a film directed by I.V. Sasi. He has even composed a raga named Navaneetha Sumasudha. In Malayalam, Mr. Sreenivas, for the first time sang in film Harischandra. He has sung many hit songs which include Mamalakalkappurathu (Ninamaninja Kalapadukal), Niranja Kannukalode…(School Master), Thulasi Vili Kelkku…(Kattuthulasi), and Beliyalla Enikkuvendathu…(Rebecca). The award will be presented to him on November 8 at a function to be held in Kochi.
