KOCHI: Going green is the latest mantra of Mar Athanasius College at Kothamangalam. The green brigade on the campus is earning applause for their continuing efforts to protect the environment. Recognitions have come in from all quarters and the latest one is the national environment awareness award instituted by the Khadi and Village Industries Development Agency of India. Winny Varghese, principal, who will receive the award on behalf of the college community at a function to be held in New Delhi on August 22, said: “The college has been carrying out different eco-friendly activities. The national environmental awareness award is in recognition of the social work being carried out by the institution in and around the campus especially in the tribal colonies. It has also been actively participating in social service programmes in Kothamangalam municipality with the support and cooperation of the Pollution Control Club, National Service Scheme (N.S.S), Nature Club and N.C.C.” The college has set up rain water harvesting project besides introducing bio-gas and water treatment plants. It has also got a herbal garden on the campus. Volunteers of the N.S.S. had played a crucial role in carrying out the construction of new houses in the tribal colonies and setting up water storage pits in the area. They have also set up vermin and bio-composting units during a camp held at Vengoor panchayat. Dr. Varghese said Kothamangalam Pollution Club is an organisation under the college where people from all walks of lives, including school students, join hands to carry out various eco-friendly activities. The club has given top priority to environment protection and promotion of organic farming. It has initiated various programmes for school students that include workshops and rain water conservation. The club has taken the lead in collection of plastic materials for surfacing the road
