Congress to continue protest

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) will continue its protests till the State government withdraws the controversial Class VII social science textbook, M.I. Shanavas, KPCC general secretary, said.

Delivering the inaugural address at the 24th State meeting of the Kerala State Service Pensioners Association here on Saturday, he said the English textbook was filled with ridiculous mistakes.

One of the first recommendations of the KPCC-appointed expert committee headed by noted historian M.G.S. Narayanan to look into the controversial textbook was to withdraw the English textbook, Mr. Shanavas said.

Relentless protests

He said that all religious bodies were against the textbook. Mr. Shanavas claimed that because of the relentless protests by the Congress, Education Minister M.A. Baby had admitted that there were certain problems in the textbook.

Mr. Shanavas said the United Progressive Alliance government would win the vote of confidence scheduled for July 22.

He said that the discussions on Indo-U.S. nuclear deal has been going on for the last two years, and had the Left parties opposed it from the very beginning, it would not have progressed to this extent. Mr. Shanavas said the deal would be finalised before September.

He said the Congress had no commitment to U.S. President George Bush but the deal was essential to resolve the country’s energy crisis.

Justifying the alliance with Samajwadi Party, Mr. Shanavas said the ultimate aim was to defeat Sangh Parivar forces. He said the Left was a non-player in places where communal forces were strong. But Samajwadi Party was strong in those regions.
