NODAL POINT: The busy Jos Junction is to be opened up as part of traffic reforms.

KOCHI: Opening up of Jos Junction for four-way traffic will mark a significant step in the City Police’s effort to realign traffic flow along arterial roads. Next in the offing is allowing two-way traffic along Chittoor Road, to take the load off M.G. Road.

The electronic signal system will become operational in a couple of days. The police are waiting for the power connection.

“Bus stops close to Jos Junction will have to be relocated as there is going to be increased traffic flow,” said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

Once the junction is opened, vehicles coming from South Railway station and Chittoor Road can come to South Government High School Junction and reach Jos Junction through Swami Chinmayananda Road and go to either side of M.G. Road.

Vehicles coming from Hotel Woodlands junction along M.G. Road can turn to Durbar Hall Road from Jos Junction and proceed towards west. Similarly, all vehicles except heavy ones coming from BTH side can reach Jos Junction and proceed to either side or to the South Railway Station.

Vehicles coming from the southern side of M.G. Road can turn right at Jos Junction to go towards the railway station, instead of going up and taking a U-turn.

“This will reduce the traffic hold-up along M.G. Road, and reduce the distance that vehicles need to run along M.G. Road before they can turn towards the railway station,” Mr. Abraham said.

Kacheripady Junction

Along with opening up of the junction, the traffic police are strictly banning parking on either side of M.G. Road near Jos Junction, along Durbar Hall Road from Jos Junction to Warriam Road Junction and along Swami Chinmayananda Road up to Girls High School. The opening up of Jos Junction comes after that of Madhava Pharmacy Junction, where vehicles are now allowed to turn to M.G. Road from Banerji Road.

In the next phase, Chittoor Road will be opened for two-way traffic, which at present allows vehicles to go only in the southward direction.

“During the first phase, two-wheelers and other small vehicles will be allowed. Smaller vehicles are going either way along many stretches in Chittoor Road, so there is no point in marking it out as one-way any longer,” said Mr. Abraham.

The traffic police are also considering opening up Kacheripadi Junction to allow traffic from Chittoor Road to turn either way to Banerji Road.
