Spadea and Santoro in last four

NEWPORT: American Vince Spadea was at his best when he needed to be on Friday, beating Austrian Alexander Peya 7-6(3), 7-5 to advance to the semifinals at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. Spadea will face defending champion Fabrice Santoro who defeated Ivan Navarro, 6-3, 7-6(4).

Prakash Amritraj’s doubles campaign ended after he and his Luxembourgian partner Gilles Muller lost 6-4, 6-2 to Rik de Voest of South Africa and Ashley Fisher of Australia.

However, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-haq-Qureshi overcame a fighting Kevin Anderson and James Cerretani to storm into the semifinals with a 7-6(4), 3-6, 10-7 win.

Bopanna and Qureshi will now play de Voest and Fischer for a place in the final.

Spadea’s win over Peya earned him his first trip to a semifinal since Delray Beach last year.

“I played well at the right times,” Spadea said. “I think I’m playing well enough to beat anybody in this tournament.”

The 33-year-old Spadea was broken in the first set to fall behind 4-5, but he broke back in the next game to eventually force the tiebreaker

Gasquet to meet Del Potro

In the Mercedes Cup at Stuttgart, French second seed Richard Gasquet beat Argentine sixth seed Agustin Calleri 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-3 on Saturday to reach his first final of the year.

The 22-year-old Frenchman will face Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday’s final after the unseeded Argentine comfortably saw off eighth-seeded Eduardo Schwank 6-2, 6-4.
