The project is being taken up at a cost of Rs 12.16 cr. to check coastal erosion It is expected to be completed in one year Kakinada: The construction of a ‘Geo-tube sea wall’ aimed at preventing the coastal erosion at Uppada, Subbampeta and Ameenabad villages in U.Kotthapalli mandal, is scheduled to commence on Monday, according to Union Minister of State for Defence and Kakinada MP M.M. Pallam Raju. Mr. Pallam Raju in a press release here on Sunday that the sea wall comprises a series of geo-synthetic tubes that will be replacing rocks as conventional building blocks in marine and hydraulic engineering structures. These tubes consisting of geo-textile material filled with a slurry mix, have proved to be an economical alternative means of constructing breakwaters, groins and erosion control structures. Geo-tubes are usually one to three meters in diameter but they can be sized as per requirements and can be used solely or stacked to desired heights and usability. The project is being taken up at a cost of Rs 12.16 crores to check coastal erosion which has been a constant threat for people of the above villages. It is expected to be completed in one year. About 20,000 people can henceforth live in peace without the fear of their habitations being swept away by surging waters of the Bay of Bengal or themselves getting sucked into it. ThankedMr. Pallam Raju thanked Union Ministers Jairam Ramesh and Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan for highlighting the problem faced in the coastal villages, in the right places and showing personal interest to relieve the people from what seemed to be an eternal scourge. He also acknowledged the efforts of State Irrigation Department Secretary (Projects) Sutirtha Bhattacharya and Sampara MLA A Bullabbai Reddy for making the project a reality.
