A picture of contrast

If it comes to talk about contrast, Bhubaneswar city gives several examples -- government-run schools and private schools, government universities and private universities, market complexes and haats and above all main roads and interior roads. The last example to show someone what the term contrast means raises a serious question about the efficiencies of the city municipal corporation and the State government.

The main road that connects the Biju Patnaik Airport with Infocity is developing by the day. The authorities are now working overtime to beautify both sides of this road.

While driving down the road, if one takes a turn to enter Shastri Nagar and Behera Sahi areas, he will have a horrifying experience. The lanes and by-lanes are badly damaged.

Similar is the situation in many such localities of the Capital city, including Saheed Nagar, Laxmisagar and Shatabdi Nagar.

The roads in these localities are full of large potholes and those in the administration seem to be blissfully ignorant of the situation. Will they ever think of the plight of the people or keep themselves engaged in beautifying the road from the airport to Infocity?

Stop reality shows

Recently, one Bangla channel conducted a reality show and a 15-year-old girl received criticism by judges in spite of her tremendous performance as a result she got mental shock and hospitalised.

Reality shows gained popularity after Kaun Banega Crorepati hits the Indian television anchored by none other than Amitabh Bachchan and after that there is a wave of reality shows in different channels offering lucrative and attractive money but a tough competition which sometimes participants failed in spite of putting their best efforts. They suffer from mental trauma and their shattered dreams will hit their morale and with no fault of theirs, they will have to pay a heavy price.

Actually organisers are benefiting a lot by conducting such reality shows and in turn giving a very small amount to the winners after filtering a lot.

The time has come to stop all the reality shows and if not possible the government should come forward with certain guidelines for conducting such shows so that audience will not suffer anymore by wasting their precious money, time, talent and mental torture.

Admission process needs change

Admission season has come and a lot of activities, mostly unethical, would begin behind the scene. The so-called educationists will be not reachable to needy people. They will only recognise parents carrying a bulky briefcase.

Recently, there was a raging controversy over the autonomy of educationists over filling up of the management quota seats as well as the seats falling vacant in case of lack of eligible candidates.

However, the State government stuck to its stance that the vacant seats would be filled up through re-counselling. It received support from citizens and student organisations. The commercialisation of education has to be stopped at a point. If the present government has started the process, the future of education in Orissa would remain transparent.
